용산기지, 서울, 대한민국 — 주한미군사 사령관과 미사일방어청장의 환담

용산기지, 서울, 대한민국 – 빈센트 브룩스 주한미군사 사령관은 8월11일 주한미군사 본부에서 제임스 시링 (해군중장) 미사일방어청장과 환담을 가졌다

이 회담에서 두 사람은 진화하는 북한의 미사일 위협에 대응하기 위해 고고도미사일방어체계 (THAAD)를 대한민국에 배치하기로 한 한미동맹의 최근 결심에 대해 논의하였다.

브룩스 사령관과 시링 청장은 대한민국과 한국 국민 그리고 역내에 가해지고 있는 북한의 심각한 핵∙미사일 위협에 다층적 미사일 방어체계의 필요성에 대해서도 논의하였다.

최근, 유엔 안전보장이사회는 탄도미사일 기술을 이용한 어떠한 활동도 금지하는 다수의 대북 제재를 위반한 북한의 최근 미사일 발사를 규탄하였다.

시링 청장의 이번 대한민국 방문은 태평양 사령부 전 작전지역에 대한 정례 순방의 일환으로 시링 청장은 2012년부터 미사일방어청을 진두지휘하고 있으며, 전력을 개발해 탄도미사일 공격으로부터 해외파병부대들과 미국 그리고 동맹국들을 방어하는 미사일방어청의 범세계적인 임무를 총괄하고 있다.

At this meeting, the two leaders discussed the recent decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile defense system to the Republic of Korea in response to the evolving North Korean missile threat.

Gen. Brooks and Vice Adm. Syring also discussed the critical need for a layered missile defense system in the ROK because of the serious nuclear and missile threat North Korea poses to the ROK, the Korean people and the region.

Recently, the United Nations Security Council condemned North Korea’s latest missile launches, in violation of multiple UNSC Resolutions that ban North Korea from any activity using ballistic missile technology.

Vice Adm. Syring’s visit to the ROK was part of a routine visit throughout the Pacific Command area of operations. He has led MDA since 2012 and in his capacity, he oversees the MDA’s worldwide mission to develop a capability to defend deployed forces, the United States, and allies against ballistic missile attacks.
