YONGSAN GARRISON, SEOUL, Republic of Korea –During a visit to Republic of Korea and United States naval forces and facilities in Busan and Chinhae, General Vincent K. Brooks, Commander of Combined Forces Command, also toured POSCO, a Korean steel manufacturing company critical to wartime success, June 28.

대한민국, 서울, 용산기지 – 빈센트 케이 브룩스 한미연합사령관은 6월 28일 부산과 진해에 있는 대한민국 해군 작전사령부와 주한미해군사령부를 순시하고 전시에 매우 중요한 방어시설 중 하나인 포스코 광양제철소를 방문하였다.

브룩스 사령관은 대한민국에서 가장 큰 규모의 하나로 선도적인 기술력을 통해 대한민국의 국가 경제에 지대한 기여를 하고 있는 광양 제철소를 직접 둘러보았다.

The company’s facility in Gwangyang is a leading producer of steel for the automotive industry. POSCO manufactures steel found in 10 percent of cars worldwide. The plant’s manufacturing capability can quickly convert to support wartime requirements in the event of a crisis on the Korean peninsula.

포스코 광양제철소는 자동차산업을 위한 굴지의 철강 생산 시설로 전세계 차량의 10퍼센트에 해당하는 철강을 생산한다. 이 제철소의 생산 능력은 한반도 유사시 전시 수요를 신속히 지원할 수 있다.

Areas such as these, visited by Gen. Brooks, are types of critical civilian infrastructure that are protected against North Korean ballistic missiles by the THAAD battery in Seongju.

브룩스 사령관이 방문한 이러한 산업시설들은 나날이 급증하는 북한 탄도미사일 위협속에 성주에 배치된 사드 (THAAD)체계를 통해 방어할 수 있는 핵심 민간 기반 시설들이다.

"This was a very useful and also a fascinating visit. South Korea is a world leader in this industry,” said Gen. Brooks. “I told the leaders that this is part of what CFC defends in times of deterrence and especially in war, as it is key to economic survival as well as military success."

브룩스 사령관은 “이번 방문은 매우 유익하고 흥미로웠다.” 며, “제철산업의 선두 주자인 대한민국의 이러한 산업시설은 한미연합사가 억제력이 필요한 시기에, 특히 전시에 방어해야 할 곳으로 군사적 성공뿐만 아니라 경제적 생존의 열쇠” 라고 강조했다.
