Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti will assume command of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea  Oct. 2 in a 2 p.m. ceremony held at Knight Field here.  Gen. Scaparrotti will assume command of UNC/CFC/USFK from Gen. James D. Thurman, who has served as the commander since July 2011.

The ceremony will be co-hosted by the U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, and the Republic of Korea Defense Minister Kim Kwan-Jin. Assisting in the ceremony are the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey, the U.S. Pacific Command Commander, Adm. Samuel Locklear III, and USFK Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony Mahoney.  The Hon. Sung Kim, U.S. Ambassador to Korea, will also attend the ceremony.

There will be three transfers of colors: one each for the Combined Forces Command, United Nations Command and U.S. Forces Korea.  Gen. Thurman will transfer the Combined Forces Command colors to Defense Sec. Hagel and Defense Min. Kim, who will jointly pass them to Gen. Scaparrotti, signifying the transition of leadership of the ROK – U.S. combined command.  Gen. Thurman will then pass the colors of the United Nations Command to Gen. Dempsey, who will pass them to Gen. Scaparrotti, signifying the transition of leadership in the unified multi-national command. Finally, Gen. Thurman will pass the colors of U.S. Forces Korea to Adm. Locklear, who will transfer them to Gen. Scaparrotti, signifying the transition in leadership of the command responsible for U.S. forces on the Korean Peninsula.

Domestic Korean media wanting to cover the event must register with the MND Press Room. International media must register with the Seoul Foreign Correspondents Club (SFCC). Each will be organized in a media pool. Selected pool media members should assemble at Gate 2 at 1:15 p.m. Camera bags and equipment will be checked by Military Police at the venue.  

The event will be webcast live on www.pentagonchannel.mil and will be aired live on the Pentagon Channel.  A transcript of the ceremony, senior leader speeches and photos will be posted at www.usfk.mil following the ceremony.

주한미군 사령관 이취임식

대한민국, 서울, 용산기지 – 10월 2일 오후 2시 용산기지나이트필드 연병장에서 열릴 이취임식 행사에서 커티스 스카파로티 (Curtis Scaparrotti) 대장이 제임스 D. 서먼 (James D. Thurman) 장군으로부터 유엔군사령부, 한미연합군사령부 그리고 주한미군사령부의 지휘권을 인계 받게 됩니다. 이번에 이임하는 제임스 서먼장군은 2011년 7월 부터 사령관직을 수행해왔습니다.

이취임식은 척 헤이글 (Chuck Hagel) 미국방장관과 김관진 한국 국방장관이 공동주관하며  또한 미합참의장 마틴 뎀프시(Martin Dempsey) 대장과 미태평양사령관 사무엘 라크리어 (Samuel Locklear III) 제독, 그리고  앤서니 마호니 (Anthony Mahoney) 주한미군 주임원사가 이 행사를 지원하게 됩니다. 또한 성 김 주한미대사도 행사에 참석할 예정입니다.

이날 행사에서 3개 사령부의 부대기를 이임하는 사령관이 신임사령관에게 인계하는 과정은 서먼 장군이 연합사령부의 부대기를 헤이글 미국방장관과 김관진 한국방장관에게 전달하고 다시 새로 부임한는 스카파로티 장군에게 최종 이양하게 됩니다. 연합사령부 부대기의 이양은  한미 연합사령부의 지휘권 변화를 의미합니다. 다음으로, 서먼 장군은 유엔사령부의 부대기를 뎀프시 장군에게 전달하고 이를 다시 스카파로티 장군에게 이양하게 됩니다. 유엔사령부 부대기의 이양은 통합된 다국적 사령부의 지휘권  변화를 의미합니다. 마지막으로, 서먼 장군은 주한미군사령부의 부대기를 라크리어 제독에게 전달하고 이를 다시 스카파로티 장군에게 이양하게 됩니다. 주한미군사령부 부대기의 이양은 한반도지역에 대한 미군의 지휘권 변화를 의미합니다.
