The Republic of Korea and United States announced the annual exercise Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG) will take place from Aug. 18 to Aug. 29.

UFG is routine and defense-oriented, designed to enhance readiness, protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula. UFG is planned months in advance and it is not connected to any current world events.

There will be approximately 30,000 U.S. service members participating, with approximately 3,000 coming from outside the ROK. U.S. forces will join ROK military forces from major ROK units representing all services, as well as ROK government participants.

“This year's UFG 14 training exercise will include participation from 10 United Nations Command sending states. Their valued participation in UFG 2014 highlights the importance of our Alliance partnerships and teamwork,” said Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, CFC commander. “We continue to enhance interoperability and common understanding to best support the defense of the Republic of Korea.”

The 10 United Nations sending states scheduled to participate in UFG 2014 are Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission will observe the exercise to validate its defensive and deterrent nature, as consistent with the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.

The United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission notified the North Korean People's Army through its Panmunjom office of the exercise dates and the routine, defensive nature of the exercise.

Training exercises like UFG are carried out in the spirit of the Oct. 1, 1953, ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty and in accordance with the Armistice. These exercises also highlight the longstanding partnership, commitment and enduring friendship between the two nations, help to ensure peace and security on the peninsula, and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the Alliance. 

‘14년 UFG 연습 실시

대한민국, 서울, 용산기지 - 대한민국과 미국은 2014년 8월 18일부터 29일까지 UFG (Ulchi Freedom Guardian) 연습을 실시한다.

UFG 연습은 다른 모든 연합연습과 마찬가지로 방어를 위한 연례연습으로, 한반도의 안정을 유지하고 역내 방호와 대비태세 향상을 위해 계획되었다. 이번 연습도 수개월에 걸쳐 계획된 것으로, 최근의 상황과 무관하다.

이번 연습에는 한국군 육해공군의 주요 부대와 정부 각 부처 관계자가 참가하고, 미군은 해외에서 증원된 3,000여명을 포함한 30,000 여명이 참가한다.

커티스 M. 스카파로티 (Curtis M. Scaparrotti)  한미연합군 사령관은 “이번 ‘14UFG 연습에 유엔파견국 10 개국이 참여하며 그들의 동참은 우리 동맹의 동반자 의식과 팀워크의 중요성을 강조하고 있다” 라고 밝히고 “본 연습은 대한민국 방어에 최선의 지원을 위해 우리가 계속해 온 상호운용성과 상호이해 향상을 위한 필수적인 과정이다”라고 덧붙였다.

’14UFG  연습에 참여하기로 예정된 유엔 파견국가는 호주, 캐나다, 컬럼비아, 덴마크, 프랑스, 이탈리아, 네덜란드, 뉴질랜드, 노르웨이 및 영국이다. 또한 중립국감시위원단 참관인원들도 이번 훈련에서 본 연습의 방어적, 억제적 성격 및, 휴전협정 (1953) 준수 여부를 확인 할 것이다.

유엔군사령부는 판문점을 통해 북한군에게 연습에 대한 일정과 이번 훈련이 정례적이고 방어적인 성격의 연습임을 통보했다.

UFG 와 같은 연습은 1953년 10월 1일 체결된 한미 상호방위조약 정신과 정전협정에 근거하여 실시된다. 아울러, 한미 양국 간의 유구한 군사적 동반자 의식과 책임 및 항구적 우정을 강조하고, 한반도의 평화 및 안보를 공고히 하며, 한미동맹 공약을 재확인에 기여한다.
