USFK Service Members Confirmed with COVID-19

PA-001-20 | June 11, 2020

Two newly assigned USFK service members tested positive for COVID-19, after arriving in South Korea from the United States on U.S. government chartered flights.

The first service member arrived at Osan Air Base on May 27, and was transported to Camp Humphreys where he tested negative on his first mandatory COVID-19 test and entered quarantine. The service member received a positive result on his second COVID-19 test required to exit quarantine.

Since testing positive, the service member has been moved to Humphrey’s isolation barracks designated for confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The second service member arrived at Osan Air Base in South Korea on June 8, where he immediately moved into a quarantine facility. On June 10, the service member tested positive for COVID and he remains in Camp Humphreys isolation barracks designated for confirmed COVID-19 cases.

USFK health professionals determined there was limited contact tracing due to the service members and all others on the chartered flight being tested and immediately quarantined; thorough cleaning of quarantine rooms have been completed.

As a testament to USFK’s aggressive preventative control measures to stop the virus’ spread, any USFK-affiliated individual arriving in South Korea from overseas will be tested for COVID-19 and then quarantined for 14 days. Medical personnel will administer another test prior to being released from isolation.

USFK will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Despite the confirmed case, USFK remains at a high level of readiness with only five active duty service members confirmed positive for COVID-19.

USFK continues to maintain a robust combined defense posture to protect the Republic of Korea against any threat or adversary while maintaining prudent preventive measures to protect the force.
