The ROK Ministry of National Defense, U.S. Forces Korea and the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) in Korea held an unveiling ceremony of the ROK-U.S. alliance sculpture today at 10:30 a.m. at the United States Forces Korea Headquarters building.

대한민국, 평택, 캠프 험프리스 – 대한민국 국방부와 주한미군사령부 그리고 주한 미국 상공회의소는 7월 10일 오전 10시 30분, 캠프 험프리스에서 한미동맹 상징조형물 제막식을 개최하였다.

U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris, ROK Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo, General Robert B. “Abe” Abrams, Commander of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and United States Forces Korea, and James Kim, Chief Executive Officer of AMCHAM delivered congratulatory remarks in honor of the unveiling ceremony.

이번 행사에서 주한 미국 대사 해리 해리스를 비롯하여 대한민국 정경두 국방부 장관, 유엔사,연합사,주한미군 사령관 로버트 B. ‘에이브’ 에이브람스 대장, 그리고  주한 미국 상공회의소 제임스 김 대표가 제막식을 기념하여 축사를 하였다.

“The U.S.-ROK alliance is the linchpin for peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula and the cornerstone for security and stability throughout the region,” said Harris. “This memorial is a manifestation of the service, contribution, and sacrifice, the blood, sweat and tears of those who fought side by side and stood shoulder to shoulder. It stands as a symbol of past sacrifices and the promise of deep friendship between our two great countries for generations to come.”

이날 제막식에 참석한 해리스 주한미국대사는 “한미 동맹은 한반도의 평화와 번영의 핵심이자 지역의 안보와 안정을 위한 초석이다. 이 상징조형물은 어깨를 맞대고 싸운 장병들의 헌신과 희생, 피와 땀과 눈물을 표현한 것이고 과거의 희생과 그리고 미래에도 양국이 깊은 우정을 지켜나가겠다는 약속의 상징이다." 라고 하였다.

The sculpture consists of five segments representing the U.S.-ROK alliance with the theme, “Tomorrow as One, Beautiful Companion.” Each segment symbolizes the commitment of service members, the history of the alliance, and the military branches of each nation. The main tower symbolizes the Korean War and Operation Chromite.

조형물은 “함께하는 내일, 아름다운 동행”이라는 주제로 제작 되었으며, 장병들의 헌신, 동맹의 역사, 그리고 육·해·공·해병 상징물까지 한미동맹을 대표하는5개 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 메인타워는 6.25한국전쟁과 인천상륙작전 (암호명: 크로마이트 작전)을 상징한다.

“This monument is a physical representation of our shared history,” said Abrams. “The Korean War solidified our bond through blood spilled together on battlefields across the peninsula. Each of the major land, air and sea battles are portrayed on the map in the center of this monument. The casualty numbers from years of brutal combat are inscribed here as well. Let us never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. As you reflect on our past, also recognize that we have a bright future ahead.”

로버트 에이브람스 대장은 “이 조형물은 우리 공동의 역사를 실체적으로 표현한 것이다. “한국전쟁시 한반도 전역의 전장에서 함께 피를 흘리며 우리의 유대감이 굳건해졌고 조형물의 중심부에는 주요 육해공 전투가 지도에 묘사되어 있다. 수년간의 잔혹한 전투가 낳은 사상자수 또한 이곳에 새겨져있다. 최후의 희생자들을 잊지 말고, 우리가 과거를 되돌아보듯, 우리 앞에 밝은 미래가 있다는 것 또한 기억합시다.” 라고 말하였다.

USFK is living proof of America’s continued commitment to the defense of the ROK. USFK has stood side-by-side with ROK and UNC Sending State partners for more than 65 years.

주한미군은 한국 방어에 미국의 지속적인 헌신을 보여주는 좋은 본보기이며 65년 이상 한국, 그리고 유엔참전국들과 함께 협력하여 왔다.
