JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii – A U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer conducted a bilateral mission in the vicinity of Japan with Koku-Jeitai (Japan Air Self-Defense Force) F-15J Eagles, followed by a bilateral mission with Republic of Korea Air Force F-15K Slam Eagles carried out in ROK airspace.

During the training mission, Koku-Jeitai F-15J Eagles from Nyutabaru Air Base, Japan, and a B-1B Lancer deployed to Anderson Air Force Base, Guam, as part of U.S. Pacific Command’s Continuous Bomber Presence Mission, conducted intercept and formation training.

The purpose of the training was to foster increased interoperability between JASDF and U.S. aircraft. Participating in bilateral training enables the operational units to improve their joint capabilities and tactical skills while also building bilateral confidence and strong working relationships.

“Bilateral cooperation with bomber aircraft, especially in the face of security challenges in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, is an outstanding demonstration of the U.S.’s commitment to our allies,” said Maj. Ryan Simpson, Pacific Air Forces bomber operations chief. “Our increased cooperation enables our combined forces to rapidly react to counter aggression against Japan and other allies and partners.”

Training engagements like these demonstrate the strength of the fellowship between Japanese and U.S. Airmen.

After the combined training with JASDF, the bombers seamlessly transitioned to fly in the vicinity of the Republic of Korea where they conducted bilateral training with Republic of Korea F-15K Slam Eagles, furthering the ROK-U.S. Alliance.

“Working and training side-by-side our ROK partners increases our ability to integrate air operations more effectively in order to deter aggression in the region,” Simpson said. “As an added bonus, the ROK offers an excellent training environment for increasing the capability of our bomber crews.”

The B-1B’s rotational bomber presence allows U.S. forces to integrate with aerial platforms from our allied nations and take advantage of opportunities to advance and strengthen the long-standing military-to-military relationships in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

미공군 폭격기, 일본 항공자위대, 그리고 한국공군과 연합훈련 실시

하와이 진주만 히캄 합동기지 – 미공군B-1B 랜서 전략폭격기들이 일본 인근에서 일본항공자위대 F-15J 전투기들과 연합훈련을 실시하고 이어서 한국 영공에서 한국공군 F-15K 전투기들과 함께 연합훈련을 실시하였다.

미태평양 사령부의 “폭격기 지속 배치임무”의 일환으로 실시된 이번 훈련에서 일본 뉴타바루 공군기지에서 발진한 항공자위대 F-15J 전투기들과 괌 앤더슨 공군기지에서 발진한 두대의 B-1B 랜서 폭격기들이 요격 및 편대 비행 훈련을 실시하였다.

이 훈련의 목적은 일본항공자위대와 미항공기 간의 상호운용성을 발전시키는 데 있으며, 연합훈련 참가를 통해 작전부대는 그들의 합동능력과 전술적인 기술을 배양함과 동시에 양국간의 신뢰와 굳건한 업무관계를 형성할 수 있었다.

미태평양공군사령부 폭격기 작전 지휘관 라이언 심슨 (Ryan Simpson) 소령은 “특히 인도-아시아-태평양지역에서의 안보에 대한 도전에 직면한 상황에서 폭격기 훈련을 통한 양국간의 협력관계는 우리 동맹국에 대한 미국의 결의를 보여주는 것이며, 우리의 이러한 협력관계는 우리의 연합전력이 일본과 다른 동맹국과 동반자관계의 국가들에 대한 적대행위에 신속히 대응할 수 있도록 해준다.” 고 밝혔다.

이러한 훈련 활동은 일본과 미국의 공군간의 강한 유대감을 보여준다.

일본항공자위대와의 연합훈련 이후 전략 폭격기들은 대한민국 인근으로 비행, 한국 공군F-15K와 양국간의 훈련을 실시하여 한미동맹을 강화하였다.

심슨소장은 “한국군과 함께 나란히 훈련하는 것은 역내에서의 도발을 억제하기 위한 항공작전을 더욱 효과적으로 통합하는 능력을 발전시키고, 추가적으로 대한민국은 전략 폭격기 대원들의 능력 향상을 위한 뛰어난 훈련환경을 제공해 주었다.” 고 덧붙였다.

B-1B 폭격기들의 순환 배치 임무는 미군사력이 동맹국들과의 공중 플랫폼을 통합할 수 있도록 하며 이 기회를 통해 인도-아시아-태평양지역에서 오랫동안 지속되어온 군사관계를 진전시키고 강화하도록 해주고 있다.
