CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii – United States Marine Corps Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, hosted Republic of Korea Army Gen. Lee, Sun-Jin, Chairman of the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Adm. Kawano, Katsutoshi, Chief of Staff of the Japanese Self-Defense Force, for a trilateral meeting in Hawaii February 10.

 The session, the second between the Defense Chiefs of the United States, Republic of Korea, and Japan since July 2014, featured discussions on trilateral information sharing and collaboration in light of the increasing North Korean nuclear and missile threats. General Lee joined the U.S. and Japanese military leaders in Hawaii from Seoul via video teleconference in order to maintain readiness posture in the peninsula due to North Korea’s January nuclear test and their recent long-range missile launch February 7. 

 The ongoing discussions reflected the nations’ efforts to enhance trilateral information sharing on North Korea nuclear and missile threat.  The three chiefs of defense reconfirmed that North Korea’s fourth nuclear test and long range missile launch were direct violations of U.N. resolutions as well as serious provocations against the international community and agreed to firmly respond to the acts utilizing trilateral information sharing.  The senior military leaders also agreed to coordinate further on mutual security issues to enhance peace and stability in the region.

美태평양사령부     2016년 2월 10일,

하와이, 캠프 H.M. 스미스—죠세프 던포드 美 합참의장은 2월 10일 하와이에서 한국의 이순진 합참의장 및 일본의 카와노 카투토시 합참의장과 함께 삼자 회의를 진행하였다.

이는 2014년 7월 이후 한미일 삼국간 행해진 두 번째 회의로, 최근 증강되는 북한의 핵 및 미사일 위협에 대한 정보 공유 및 협조에 대한 논의가 이뤄졌다. 이순진 의장은 북한의 핵실험 및 2월 7일 장거리 미사일 발사로 인한 한반도의 대비태세를 유지하기 위해 서울에서 화상으로 회의를 참석하였다.

본 회의는 북한의 핵 및 미사일 위협에 관해 삼자간 정보 공유를 강화하기 위한 노력을 반영한 것이다. 한미일 합참의장은 북한의 4차 핵실험 및 장거리 미사일 발사는 UN 결의를 명백히 위반하는 국제사회에 대한 심각한 도발 행위임을 재차 강조하고, 삼자 정보 공유를 더욱 활발하게 활용할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 또한 고위 군 지도자들은 역내 평화 및 안정을 강화하기 위해 공동 안보와 관련하여 더욱 긴밀하게 협조할 것에 동의 하였다.
