In response to North Korea’s most recent provocation, Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, Commander for United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea, expressed confidence in the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense recently deployed to the Korean Peninsula.

북한이 가장 최근에 감행한 도발에 대응해 빈센트 브룩스 유엔군사령부, 한미연합사령부 및 주한미군사령부 사령관은 최근 한반도에 배치된 고고도미사일방어체게 사드 (THAAD)에 자신감를 표명했다.

"This most recent interception of a Medium Range Ballistic Missile, like the previous one against an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, adds to the confidence I have in the THAAD system deployed to Seongju to defeat the North Korean threats against the Republic of Korea,” said Gen. Brooks.

브룩스 사령관은 “이전 중장거리 미사일의 요격 시험과 함께 가장 최근에 실시된 준중거리 미사일의 요격시험은 북한 위협을 저지하기 위해 성주에 배치된 고고도미사일방어체계 사드에 대한 신뢰를 더헤 줍니다,”고 말했다.

Last week’s medium-range target ballistic missile was air-launched by a U.S.
Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean. The THAAD weapon system located at
Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska in Kodiak, Alaska, detected, tracked and intercepted the target.

지난주의 중거리 탄도미사일 표적은 태평양 상공에서 미공군 수송기 C-17에서 발사 되었다. 알래스카주 코디액 태평양우주발사기지에 위치한 사드 무기체계는 표적을 탐지하고 추적하고 요격하였다.

The test, designated Flight Experiment THAAD (FET)-01, was conducted to gather threat data from a THAAD interceptor in flight.

비행실험 사드 (FET)-01으로 지정된 이 시험은 비행 중인 사드 요격기로 부터 위협자료를 수집하기 위해 실시 되었다.

"After this recent interception, especially given that this is the 15th or 16th successful live interception by THAAD, I do not know why anyone would doubt that it is capable of doing what we intended for it to do by deploying it here to Korea -- that is, defeat incoming north Korean ballistic missiles threatening the Republic,” Gen. Brooks said.

"이번 요격 이후, 특히 15번 또는 16번째 성공적인 사드 요격임을 고려할 때, 사드를 이곳 한국에 배치한 것이 대한민국을 위협하는 북한 탄도미사일을 물리치기 위한 목적이며, 그것을 요격할 능력이 있다는 것은 의심할 이유가 없습니다."

According to the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, the THAAD element provides a globally-transportable, rapidly-deployable capability to intercept ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere during their final, or terminal, phase of flight. THAAD is strictly a defensive weapon system. The system uses hit-to-kill technology where kinetic energy destroys the incoming target.

미 국방부 미사일방어국 (MDA)에 따르면 사드체계는 전세계적 수송과 신속한 배치가 가능해 마지막 또는 최종단계의 비행 중 대기권 안팍에서 탄도미사일을 요격할 수 있는 능력을 제공한다. 사드는 엄격히 방어적인 무기체계이다 . 사드는 직겨파괴 기술을 이용해 운동에너지로 날아드는 표적을 파괴한다.

Soldiers from the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade conducted launcher, fire control and radar operations using the same procedures they would use in an actual combat scenario.

제11방공포병여단은 실전 시나리오와 같은 절차로 발사대, 사격통제 및 레이다 운영을 실시하였다.

"I understand some people still doubt that THAAD will work. I am not one of them,” stated Gen. Brooks.

브룩스 사령관은 “어떤 이들은 사드가 효과적일지 아직 의심하고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 저는 그 중 하나가 아닙니다,”고 말했다.
