Preparing Your Vehicle for Shipment
Service members assigned to U.S. military components operating in Korea may be authorized to ship one privately owned vehicle (POV) at government expense as part of their Permanent Change of Station (PCS). This entitlement must be explicitly stated in your PCS orders. Shipping additional vehicles is not typically covered and would be at your own expense. In such cases, approval through an exception to policy is required to register more than one vehicle under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).
To ship your POV overseas, you must schedule a drop-off at a designated Vehicle Processing Center (VPC). The official website for appointments, tracking, and shipping guidance is www.pcsmypov.com. It provides the most current instructions, checklists, and regulations related to POV shipment.
Key Considerations Before Shipping Your Vehicle
Before delivering your vehicle to the VPC, ensure you have taken the following steps to avoid delays or complications:
Complete routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire checks, battery replacement, and other basic services.
Thoroughly clean the interior and exterior of your vehicle a day or two before drop-off.
Take clear, time-stamped photos and videos of your vehicle’s interior and exterior. These should be used to verify condition upon delivery and pick-up.
Ensure the fuel tank is no more than one-quarter full at the time of drop-off. Vehicles with more fuel may be denied.
Remove all personal belongings and non-permanent accessories before the vehicle is turned in.
It is strongly recommended to confirm what damages are covered by the vehicle carrier. Consider purchasing additional comprehensive insurance to protect your vehicle during transit.
The VPC inspection form serves as your official record of the vehicle’s condition prior to shipment. Take the time to review it thoroughly and do not feel pressured to rush through the process.
Vehicle Storage
Storage of a vehicle at government expense is only authorized if specifically stated in your PCS orders. If you are unsure about your entitlements, consult your servicing transportation or finance office prior to making arrangements.
Shipping and Vehicle Pick-up
Arrive on time for your VPC appointment and bring all required documents. Complete the inspection and related paperwork as directed by VPC personnel. Keep a copy of your shipping summary and inspection form—these will be required when retrieving your vehicle overseas.
