In late December, U.S. Forces Korea took another step in their relocation efforts to Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek’s metropolitan area with the closure of U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan’s gate 19 on Camp Coiner.

대한민국, 용산기지 – 주한미군사령부는 평택에 위치한 험프리기지로의 이전 계획의 일환으로 용산기지 19번 게이트를 지난 12월 말 폐쇄시켰다.

Additionally, USFK closed several living quarters and work areas in the area to prepare for eventual U.S. Embassy facilities in the area.

아울러 주한미군사는 캠프 코이너 지역으로 미 대사관 시설 이전을 위해 해당 지역에 위치한 다수의 주거 및 업무 시설들을 폐쇄시켰다.

"The provision of the northern portion of Camp Coiner to the Department of State is significant because it allows them to start construction of the new U.S. Embassy compound after many years of planning and preparation,” said Maj. Gen. James T. Walton, United States Forces Korea’s Transformation and Relocation director.

주한미군사령부의 변혁과 이전을 총괄하고 있는 제임스 월튼 소장은 “미국무부가 수년에 걸친 계획과 준비 끝에 미대사관 공관을 캠프 코이너 북쪽 지역에 신축하게 되는 상당히 의미있는 일이라고 말했다.

“The new compound will replace the existing facility in Gwanghamun and allow the U.S. State Department to more effectively participate in the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance in a modern facility for its employees and visitors."

“신 공관은 광화문에 있는 기존 대사관 건물을 대체하여 미국무부가 그들의 직원과 대사관 방문객에게 현대식 시설물을 제공해 한미 동맹을 더욱 효과적으로 만들수 있을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

While the view from outside the base appears largely the same, the interior of Camp Coiner is starting to have a new look as workers are assembling fence lines in order to facilitate removal of some of the old Yongsan structures.

캠프 코이너 외관에는 커다란 변화가 없지만, 기지 내부는 공사담당자들이 낡은 구조물을 제거하기 위해 울타리를 설치함에 따라 새로운 모습으로 변모하기 시작할 것이다.

Walton also added that USFK plans to continue to vacate more of the base as more units, activities and services continue to move to Camp Humphreys in 2018 with the intent to return the land to the Republic of Korea as quickly as possible.

월튼 소장은 용산 기지를 조속히 대한민국으로 가능한한 빨리 이전하려는 주한미군사령부의 계획에 따라 2018년에는 더 많은 부대들, 복지및 공공시설들도 험프리스 기지로 이전해 용산 기지를 지속적으로 비워나갈 것이라고 밝혔다.
