Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Screening

As part of the Command Sponsorship process, dependents accompanying a Service Member assigned to U.S. military components operating in Korea are required to complete an Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) screening. This ensures any ongoing medical or educational needs are identified and appropriately considered during the assignment process.

What is EFMP?

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative that supports Service Members with dependents who have specialized medical or educational needs. This includes both adult and child dependents, typically up to 21 years of age.

The purpose of EFMP is to ensure families are assigned to duty stations where the required support services are available—whether provided through military resources or host-nation capabilities. Enrollment is mandatory for active-duty Service Members with qualifying family members and is required when requesting Command Sponsorship or other overseas assignment actions.

Why EFMP Screening is Required

EFMP screening is a necessary step in the overseas assignment process to ensure that appropriate services—such as medical care, therapies, or educational support—are accessible at the gaining location. This process is critical to promoting mission readiness while maintaining the well-being of Service Members and their families.

Service Members should initiate enrollment or update EFMP information as soon as a qualifying condition is diagnosed or educational needs are identified.

General EFMP Screening Steps

Although exact procedures may vary by installation and military branch, the general steps include:

  1. Attend a relocation or assignment briefing at your current duty station.

  2. Schedule an EFMP screening appointment through your installation’s medical clinic or EFMP office.

  3. Submit the required documents.

  4. A designated EFMP professional will review the information and determine whether EFMP enrollment is necessary. Guidance will be provided for any follow-up steps.

Need Help?

If you need assistance with EFMP screening, enrollment, or updates, please contact the EFMP coordinator, medical facility, or family support office at your current duty station. Each U.S. military component operating in Korea may have designated points of contact to guide you through the process.

For the most accurate and up-to-date guidance, consult your chain of command or local EFMP office.
