Col. Dan Friend is an Army Aviator and Force Management Officer. Born and raised in Queens, New York, COL Friend enlisted as an Armor Crewman in the New York Army National Guard and was commissioned through ROTC at St. John’s University. As an Army Aviator, COL Friend was qualified in the UH-1 (Huey), OH-58 (Kiowa) and AH-64 (Apache) serving in multiple tactical command and staff positions with the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Infantry Division, 229th Aviation Regiment and the 75th Infantry Division (AC/RC). 

In 2003 COL Friend was designated a Force Management Officer serving as a Department of the Army Force Integration Officer, the 2nd Infantry Division Force Management Officer, an Army Campaign Plan Integration Officer and Branch Chief, the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command (IJC) Chief of Force Management, the Under Secretary of the Army Strategic Initiatives Group Deputy, and the United State Forces Korea Chief of Capabilities and Assessments. 

COL Friend is currently the Secretary to the Combined Joint Staff Untied States Forces Korea.  COL Friend served overseas in Korea, Bosnia and Afghanistan and holds a Bachelor of Science from St. John’s University, a MBA from George Mason University and Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from National Defense University.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (5OLC), Army Commendation Medal (6 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC) and the Order of St. Michael.  He has earned the Senior Army Aviator, Airborne and Air Assault Badges.  He and his wife Kathy have three children, Joe (16), Emma (13) and Will (10) and live on Yongsan Army Garrison in Korea.
