On February 19, 2019, at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, retired U.K. Sergeant Speakman was interred surrounded by family, U.K. delegates, and members of the United Nations Command (UNC). Deputy Commander, UNC, Lieutenant-General Wayne Eyre attended the service to pay his respects and laid a wreath for Sgt Speakman representing the UNC and the other Sending States also in attendance.
William ‘Bill’ Speakman, the first U.K. soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Elizabeth II, died last year at 90-years old. Speakman was from Altrincham in Greater Manchester and was only 24 years old when he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the Korean War.
At 6 foot 6 inches tall, Sgt Speakman was known as ‘Big Bill’. While still a private in 1951, he fought off a sustained attack on a ridge known as Hill 217 in Marysang-san when it was besieged by Chinese forces. He was a Black Watch soldier attached to the 1st Battalion of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in B Company. It was November and the battalion came under heavy fire. Instead of simply priming and delivering grenades, Speakman filled his pockets with hand grenades and in the dark began pelting the opposing forces uses their rifle flashes as his targets. He inspired other soldiers to join him on the ridge, tossing anything they could find when the grenades ran out.
Sgt Speakman was injured twice during the defense of Hill 217, in the leg and the shoulder, but he went right back to fight. The citation for his Victoria Cross said he had imposed enormous losses on the enemy and saved the lives of many of his comrades.
In 2015, he was awarded the Taegeuk Cordon 1st Class of the National Order of Military Merit by the South Korean government for outstanding military services. During his interment ceremony his daughter Susie Speakman said, “He was very proud to receive this honour from the nation he fought for. During the course of that conflict my father and his brothers in arms fought a brave and relentless fight resisting enemy onslaught and depleted fire power. In exhausting and harsh conditions he was witness to the loss of many of his regiment and close friends.”
Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Simon Smith explained that, “The service of Bill Speakman and 81,000 of his fellow British service personnel of whom 1,105 made the supreme sacrifice forged a bond between the Republic of Korea and the United Kingdom which endures to this day.”
Ret’d Sgt Speakman, visited South Korea in 2015 and donated 10 of his medals, including a replica of his Victoria Cross, to the South Korean people. They are displayed at the War Memorial in Seoul. British Ambassador Smith said, “The people of Korea have never forgotten what Bill and his comrades did on their behalf.”
Susie Speakman added, “It’s therefore entirely fitting and in keeping with his wishes, that Bill Speakman’s family should inter his ashes here at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, alongside 885 of his British comrades. We shall remember them all.”
William Speakman was born on September 21, 1927 and died June 20, 2018. Today his ashes were interred in the land he fought bravely for. He was the last surviving British Victoria Cross recipient from the Korean War.
2019년 2월 19일, 부산 – 한국전쟁 영국군 참전용사 (고) 스피크먼 병장의 유해가 유가족과 영국 대표단, 유엔사 관계자들이 참석한 가운데 19일 부산 유엔기념공원에 안장되었다. 유해 안장식에 참석한 웨인 에어 유엔사령부 부사령관(중장)은 고인에게 경의를 표하고 유엔사령부와 전력 제공국 참석자들을 대표하여 헌화하였다.
윌리엄 ‘빌’ 스피크먼은 엘리자베스 2세 영국 여왕으로부터 빅토리아 십자훈장을 수여받은 최초의 영국 군인으로 지난해 90세의 나이로 세상을 떠났다. 스피크먼은 그레이터 맨체스터의 알트린참 출신으로 한국전쟁 당시 용맹함으로 불과 24세에 빅토리아 십자훈장을 수여받았다.
198센티미터 키에 스피크먼은 ‘큰 빌’로 알려져 있었다. 1951년 이등병인 그는 마량산 217고지 전투에서 중공군에 맞서 치열한 격전을 벌였다. 그느 스콜틀랜드 국경수비대 1대대 B중대에 소속된 블랙 워치 군인이었다. 11월이었고 그 대대는 치열한 공격을 받았다. 단순히 수류탄을 준비하고 운반하는 대신에, 스피크먼은 수류탄으로 그의 주머니를 채웠고 어둠 속에서 적들의 총구 섬광을 표적으로 삼아 적군을 공격하기 시작하였다. 그는 수류탄이 바닥나 손에 잡히는 모든 것이든 던지면서 다른 병사들도 함께 싸우기를 독려하였다.
스피크먼 병장은 217고지 수비 도중 다리와 어깨에 두 차례 부상을 당했으나 곧바로 다시 전투에 나섰다. 그가 수여받은 빅토리아 십자훈장은 그가 적에게 막대한 손실을 입혔고 많은 동료들의 목숨을 구했다고 말하고 있다.
2015년 그는 훌륭한 군 복무로 대한민국 정부로부터 최고 무공훈장(태극)을 수여받았다. 그의 딸 수지 스피크먼은 안장식에서, "아버지는 그가 싸웠던 나라로부터 이 영예를 받은 것을 매우 자랑스러워 했다. 분쟁의 과정에서 나의 아버지와 그의 전우들은 적군의 맹공격에 저항하며 용감하고 끈질긴 싸움을 벌였다. 지치고 혹독한 환경속에서 그는 다수의 친한 친구들을 잃는 것을 목격했다” 라고 말했다.
사이먼 스미스 주한 영국 대사는 “지대한 희생을 한 1,105명의 군인들을 포함한 빌 스피크먼과 그의 동료 81,000명의 영국 군인들은 오늘날까지 지속되는 대한민국과 영국간의 유대를 구축했다.” 라고 설명했다.
예비역병장 스피크먼은 2015년 대한민국을 방문해서 빅토리아 십자훈장의 모형을 포함한 10점의 훈장을 대한민국 국민에게 기증하였다. 훈장들은 서울 전쟁기념관에 전시되었다. 스미스 주한 영국 대사는 “대한민국 국민들은 빌과 그의 전우들이 대한민국 국민을 위해 한 희생을 잊지 않았습니다,” 라고 말했다.
수지 스피크먼은 “ 그의 바람대로 한국에 있는 유엔묘지에 그의 유골이 885명의 영국 전우들과 나란히 안장되었다. 우리는 그들 모두를 기억해야 한다,” 라고 덧붙였다.
윌리엄 스피크맨은 1927년 9월 21일에 태어나, 2018년 6월 20일에 세상을 떠났다. 오늘 그의 유골은 그가 용맹하게 싸운 땅에 묻혔다. 그는 한국전쟁에서 빅토리아 십자훈장을 수여받은 수상자 중 마지막 생존자였다.
