Colonel Yancy S. Cowen

Colonel Yancey S. Cowen recently completed the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.  He is the United States Forces J1 in June 2015.  Prior to that, he was assigned as the J1 for Special Operations Command Africa at Kelley Barracks, Stuttgart, Germany for two years.  Before working in Germany, he commanded Provincial Reconstruction Team Kapisa, Afghanistan.  While assigned at the Pentagon, he completed a one-year assignment as the military speechwriter to the Secretary of Defense.  As part of his duties, he prepared speeches, talking points, Congressional testimony, press briefings, and related material on national security and foreign policy for the Secretary of Defense.  Prior to that assignment, he commanded the 43d Mission Support, and later, the 43d Force Support Squadron at Pope Air Force Base. 

Colonel Cowen is from Burlington, North Carolina and spent most of his childhood in Jackson, TN.  He entered the Air Force in 1994 after graduating from the University of Memphis in 1994. 

He is married and has two sons.
