Biography

Colonel Robert S. Mathews, Jr. was commissioned as a second lieutenant Adjutant General officer through the Army ROTC program after graduating from Valley Forge Military Junior College in 1988.

His previous assignments include Operational Detachment Commander and Assistant Operations Officer, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC; COL Mathews transitioned to be an Observer/Controller at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Special Operations Training Detachment, in Fort Polk, LA; COL Mathews then had a break in service where he took positions of increasing responsibility as an internal Six Sigma process improvement consultant for GE Commercial Equipment Finance in Danbury, CT, and the Small Business Finance Group in St. Louis, MO; he then accepted the role of SVP of Operations for the Commercial Business Group at Citibank North America in New York City, NY; following 9/11, COL Mathews transitioned back onto Active Duty and was assessed into Army Acquisitions Contracting in 2007; COL Mathews served as the 608th Contingency Contracting Team Leader, then Operations Officer for the 900th Contingency Contracting Battalion; he then took over as the Deputy Regional Contracting Chief in Kandahar, Afghanistan, followed by Battalion Command of the 901st Contracting Battalion at Fort Hood, TX. Prior to his arrival to 411th CSB, COL Mathews attended the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, PA.

Colonel Mathews has a Master’s degree from the U.S. Army War College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Elizabethtown College, and an Associates in Business Administration from Valley Forge Military Junior College. COL Mathews is Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act Level III certified in Contracting. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and Command and General Staff College, among others.

His military awards, decorations, badges, tabs and foreign jump wings include Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals (five Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medals (two Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medals (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Reserve Components Achievement Medals (one Oak Leaf Cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Mobilization Medals (one Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Military Free Fall Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Excellence in Competition – Bronze Pistol and Bronze Rifle, German Armed Forces Parachutist Badge (Bronze), Ecuadorian Jumpmaster Badge and Star of the Armed Forces of Ecuador in the Rank of Military Star. His units have earned Joint Meritorious Unit Awards (four Oak Leaf Clusters).

Colonel Mathews is joined by his wife, Cindy, his daughter, Alexis. His son, Riley, remains in NYC with his mother.
